Support the Special Olympics Athletes

The people of Kaua‘i are invited to join in and support Kaua‘i’s Special Olympics athletes this Saturday April 12th

Starting at 7 a.m., runners and walkers can register for the annual Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run at the First Hawaiian Bank, Lihu‘e Branch.

At 7:30 a.m. Kaua‘i’s law enforcement officers will run the “Flame of Hope” from the First Hawaiian Bank to the Vidinha Stadium starting at 7:30 a.m.

Runners and walkers wishing to participate in the Troy Barboza Run need to register for $20 per participant and will receive a commemorative crew neck T-shirt or tank top which will feature the new surfboard logo.

For those who decide not to participate in the run but still want to show support, shirts are available for sale now at all First Hawaiian Bank branches, or through the Kaua‘i Police Department. All proceeds from the Troy Barboza Run as well as from the T-shirt sales will benefit the Special Olympics Hawai‘i program.

Some of the groups that have participated in the run include the football teams from all three of Kaua‘i’s public high schools, the Lifetime Stand from the Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center, families of law enforcement officers, and many of the community residents who take advantage of walking, jogging, or running during the cool of the morning.

With the completion of the run, a Kaua‘i Special Olympic athlete will join the law enforcement officer in lighting the caldron symbolizing the start of the Special Olympics Kaua‘i Track and Field Meet at Vidinha Stadium.

That ceremony starts at 8 a.m. with the athletic events starting at 8:30 a.m.

“There is nothing like seeing the happy faces of our athletes as they compete before a loud cheering audience,” said Shelly Gerardo, a longtime volunteer with the Kaua‘i Special Olympics.

The morning will be filled with athletic events as the Special Olympic athletes compete in various field and track events such as the 50 meter dash, standing and running long jump, shot put, softball throw, and the 400 meter relay.

Joining the athletes, a volunteer task force from the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa always helps coordinate the athletes’ registration, track and field events, and the awards presentations.

This year, according to a blurb in the East Kaua‘i Lions Club newsletter, that organization is also planning to turn out to support the athletes as they compete to qualify for the statewide Special Olympics Track and Field competition held on O‘ahu during the summer.

In addition to the Special Olympics athletic competition, people can also stop by for a kalua pork and cabbage lunch which will be available at the food booth.

Tickets for the lunch is a $7 donation and are available in advance from any Special Olympic athlete.

The Special Olympics mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

For more information about enrolling an athlete, or to volunteer, call 652-8662.

ATA Airlines Discontinues all Operations as of April 2, 2008

After filing for Chapter 11 on April 2, 2008 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Indianapolis, IN, ATA Airlines has discontinued all operations and cancelled all current and future flights. Following the loss of a key contract for our military charter business, it became impossible for ATA to continue operations. Unfortunately, we were not in a position to provide our customers or others with advance notice.

We apologize for the disruption caused by the sudden shutdown of ATA and regret the impact on passengers, employees, suppliers, and other parties. ATA customers should seek alternative arrangements for current and future travel. A list of other airlines serving ATA’s destinations is available here.

ATA customers who purchased tickets using a credit card should contact their credit card company or travel agency directly for information about how to obtain a refund for unused tickets.

ATA currently is unable to provide refunds to customers who purchased tickets directly from ATA with cash or a check. These customers may be able to obtain a full or partial refund for their unused tickets by submitting a claim in ATA’s Chapter 11 proceedings. Information about submitting a claim will be available at the following website: http://www.bmcgroup.com/ataairlines.

Customers who purchased tickets from Southwest Airlines for flights operated by ATA under the codeshare agreement should contact Southwest Airlines directly at (800) 308-5037. Aloha Airlines to shut down passenger operations after March 31, 2008, Ending a 61-Year Tradition of Service to Hawaii

Special Notice regarding Aloha Airlines suspension of passenger service: Aloha Airlines to shut down passenger operations after March 31, 2008:

Aloha Airlines announced today that it will be shutting down its inter-island and transpacific passenger flight operations. Alohas last day of operations will be Monday, March 31, 2008. On that day, Aloha will operate its schedule with the exception of flights from Hawaii to the West Coast and flights from Orange County to Reno and Sacramento, and Oakland to Las Vegas. Code-share partner United Airlines and other airlines are prepared to assist and accommodate Aloha?s passengers who have been inconvenienced.

For more information on Uniteds accommodation options, contact United at 1-800-UNITED1 or United Airlines . Passengers who do not wish to be re-accommodated by another airline should contact their travel agent or credit card company to request a refund. Effective immediately, Aloha will stop selling tickets for travel beyond March 31, 2008.

The shutdown of Alohas passenger operations will affect about 1,900 employees. Aloha also announced that its air cargo and aviation services units will continue to operate as usual while the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeks bids from potential buyers. On March 27, 2008, Saltchuk Resources, Inc., announced its intention to buy Aloha's air cargo business.

This is an incredibly dark day for Hawaii, said David A. Banmiller, Aloha's president and chief executive officer. Despite the groundswell of support from the community and our elected officials, we simply ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure continued financing for our passenger business. We had no choice but to take this action.

We deeply regret the impact this will have on our dedicated employees who have made Aloha one of the best operating airlines in the country. Aloha Airlines was founded in 1946 to give Hawaii?s people a choice in inter-island air transportation.

Unfortunately, unfair competition has succeeded in driving us out of business, bringing to an end a 61-year-old company with a proud legacy of serving millions of travelers in the true spirit of Aloha. We realize that this comes as a devastating disappointment to our frequent flyers and our loyal business partners who have supported this company for many, many years.

Early April Fools Prank? Man Rides Horse through hospital!

A spokesman for Wilcox Memorial Hospital on the Hawaiian island of Kauai said a man called the hospital earlier this month and said he was going to ride his father's horse into the hospital, where his father was a patient.

"He proceeded to take the horse up the elevator up to the nursing floor where he was met by security and our nurse supervisor," said the spokesman.

The man, who authorities said appeared intoxicated at the time, posed for pictures with the horse and an off-duty nurse.

The animal was escorted out of the building after the man's father claimed the horse wasn't his, the spokesman said.

"We do have a pet visitation policy, but it does not include a horse," said the spokesman. "Although it sounds funny, we don't want to compromise our visitor and our patient healthcare."

The hospital said it notified the health department.

Officials with the heath department said they would look into the incident to determine if any actions are needed to ensure the safety of the hospital. An internal hospital investigation, however, found that the incident did not warrant any disciplinary action.

"We investigate all incidents and this is a very rare incident and naturally it's something we sat and discussed so we can understand how it happened and how we can prevent it the next time," said the hospital spokesman.

The hospital did say that they are looking for ways to improve security at the hospital.

Kauai is the northernmost and fourth largest of the major Hawaiian islands.

Most events are free of charge to the public with many activities taking place at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa.

Tomorrow through Thursday events include native Hawaiian cultural teaching and demonstrations including a guided hike on the Makawehi sand dunes Sunday, as well as classes and demonstrations Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on lauhala bracelet making (small fee), coconut frond weaving and lei making. Demonstrations and lectures are given by some of Hawai‘i’s most highly regarded artists such as quilters, weavers, wood carvers, pohaku (stone) carvers, feather arts and tapa makers.

From 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., March 30, the Prince Kuhio Celebration Lu‘au (discounted fee) will be hosted by the Grand Hyatt featuring introduction of members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha, along with entertainment by Hawai‘i’s well-known falsetto singer Nicky Castillo.

Sustainable Agriculture Initiative

Let’s hope this isn’t just a slow news day, and that our local newspaper actually sees Food self-reliance as a major issue on our island.

Either way, it’s refreshing to find this story about Kauai growers seeking to inspire a more sustainable strategy for local food production on the front page.

Lifestyle writer Keya Keita interviewed a group of seven farmers on our North Shore who belive that “depending on outside resources for our fresh food seems ludicrous when everything under the sun can be grown right here.”

Collectively, these island entrepreneurs have been growing several-hundred types of vegetables, fruits and botanicals for a bunch of years.

Now, group leader Mary Mauger is working on a program to educate the community on the possibility of the “all Kaua‘i meal.”

Holding workshops on her farm and creating recipes that celebrate the extraordinary diversity of food grown locally, says Mauger, is the “beginning of helping people understand that everything we need is here. It’s not only healthier for ourselves, but healthier for the land.”

With all the difficulties in farming and the up-hill battle of gaining community support for sustainable methods, why do these farmers keep doing it?

Here’s wot they say:

“The experience of watching plants produce, and food grow”.
“To grow healthy food for the people”.
“To be in nature. To witness the process.”
“We eat like kings”.
“The lifestyle.”
The farmers sincerely hope that, “Kaua‘i’s community becomes involved in these issues and begins to change the way they see the food in the store and on the plate. We need the support of this island to make the future of food here viable,” said the group.

You go, island growers!

After all, a “100 mile diet” for Kauai means everything we eat will be grown on island
